CommonSpirit’s legacy of providing high-performing, compassionate care in Utah began more than 148 years ago, when the Sisters of the Holy Cross founded Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City in 1875. It was the second hospital established in Utah, and it had just 13 beds and three doctors who worked without payment. CommonSpirit Health purchased its five Utah hospitals in 2023, returning them to their Catholic heritage and strengthening the values-driven health care offerings in Utah. Acting upon its vision of building a healthier future for all—inspired by faith, driven by innovation. and powered by humanity—CommonSpirit has invested more than $100 million in its facilities and caregivers in Utah in the past 18 months.

University of Utah Health's legacy of advancing medical education, research, and patient-centered care in Utah spans over 80 years, beginning with its establishment as the state’s only academic medical center. Founded in Salt Lake City in 1965, University of Utah Health has grown from a single hospital to an expansive network, pioneering innovations in fields like genetics, cancer treatment, neurology, orthopedics, and cardiovascular care. As part of its mission, U of U Health is committed to training the next generation of health care providers and addressing the unique needs of Utah's communities.
