CommonSpirit Health offers comprehensive services designed to help you take control of diabetes, reduce its risks and live a rich, active life. Through nationally recognized diabetes education programs and experienced clinicians, we’re dedicated to nurturing your health.

More than 29 million Americans have diabetes, and 1 in 4 don’t know it. What’s more, another 86 million adults have prediabetes, a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal. Without taking action, prediabetes can lead to type 2 diabetes within five years. Because diabetes can result in serious health problems — such as heart disease, vision loss and kidney failure — it’s important to work with your health care team to prevent or manage diabetes.

At CommonSpirit, doctors, educators, nurses and dietitians work together with you to tailor individualized plans designed to gain control of your diabetes. We’re committed to providing you with complete diabetes care in Colorado, Utah and Western Kansas, which includes preventive care and diabetes counseling, education and management.

    • Type 1 diabetes - generally affects younger people and accounts for about 5 percent of all cases of diabetes. It’s not caused by lifestyle or diet.
    • Type 2 diabetes - is the most common form of diabetes. You’re more likely to develop type 2 diabetes if you’re overweight and not physically active.
    • Gestational diabetes - occurs in women who’ve never had diabetes but who experience high blood sugar during pregnancy.

Because its symptoms can be subtle or similar to those of other conditions, diabetes often goes undiagnosed.

Symptoms of type 2 diabetes may include:

    • Blurry vision
    • Excessive thirst
    • Extreme hunger
    • Frequent infections
    • Frequent urination
    • Irritability
    • Increased fatigue
    • Slow to heal cuts/bruises
    • Tingling/numbness in hands/feet
    • Unusual weight loss
    • Recurring bladder, skin or gum infections

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, make an appointment to see your doctor right away.

While there’s no cure for diabetes, good diabetes management can enhance your quality of life, reduce symptoms and prevent complications.

    This is accomplished through:

    • Blood pressure and cholesterol control
    • Education
    • Foot and eye care
    • Medication (if needed)
    • Nutrition
    • Regular exercise
    • Self-monitoring of blood sugar levels
    • Weight control
