Leave a Legacy 5K, 10K races Saturday at Heartland Cancer Center

October 4, 2019

(GARDEN CITY, KAN.) One of southwest Kansas’ premier races will be held in Garden City on Saturday morning, and once again the question for those planning to participate is: Who do you run for?

The Leave a Legacy Foundation’s 12th annual Leave a Legacy 5K and 10K road races, proceeds of which fund the foundation’s mission to strengthen the cancer fighting resources in southwest Kansas, is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Heartland Cancer Center, 410 E. Spruce St. in Garden City.

The goal this year, according to St. Catherine Hospital Development Foundation Stewardship Coordinator Paige Kraus, is to have 1,000 participants. The event will feature 5K and 10K races starting at 8:30 a.m., a pancake feed at thecancer center at 9 a.m. and a Kids Fun Run at 10 a.m.

Pre-registration and runner bag pick-up can be done from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Heartland Cancer Center, as well as online at www.whodoyourunfor.org.

The foundation was created in 2007 to honor the life of Laura Kleysteuber, who died that year at age 30 after a six-year battle with brain cancer. Over the years, the number of runners participating in the races has grown, and so have the proceeds raised to fight cancer throughout the region. Participants often run to remember loved ones who died of cancer, as well those who continued their fight.

Proceeds have been used to help purchase the cancer center’s 3D mammography machine, as well as pay for St. Catherine’s membership in the Midwest Cancer Alliance. Funds also have been used to provide patients with “Laura’s Touches” — to include fuel cards, Chamber of Commerce gift certificates, movie tickets, blankets and more — snacks and beverages for cancer center patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatment.

The cost to enter includes a $35 race fee and $3 signup fee, with special discounts for teams and members of the Southwest Kansas Fun Time Runners.
