Professional Nursing contributes to care of patients at St. Anthony Hospital and the surrounding community through the following services:
Bone and joint care: Nurses provide pre-and post-operative care to patients needing new joints or other surgical interventions. Nurses teach classes on what to expect while in the hospital, then support the patient and family through the hospital experience. Nurses prioritize early mobility and pain control to help patients get home as soon as possible.
Cancer care: St. Anthony Hospital nurses are part of the CommonSpirit Health Cancer Network, providing evidence-based diagnosis and treatment unique to each patient. Oncology nurses are nationally certified, providing a high level of expertise in providing chemotherapy medications. Nurse navigators support the patient and connect them to hospital and community resources. Radiation Oncology nurses provide targeted treatments and assist patients in reducing side effects from those treatments. Palliative Care nurses support end-of-life decision-making and pain management throughout the cancer journey. Nurses facilitate multiple community support groups to help patients manage their cancer experience.
Cardiology care: Nurse practitioners and cardiac rehabilitation nurses organize cardiac testing for early identification of heart disease and cardiac rehabilitation following a heart disease diagnosis. Cardiac catheterization lab and electrophysiology nurses support patients through skilled vascular procedures to improve circulation and collaborate with the Emergency Department to provide prompt interventions to reduce the negative effects of heart attacks. Cardiac intensive care unit nurses and telemetry nurses provide inpatients with support and monitoring to identify and manage cardiac symptoms and arrhythmias.
Case management care: Nurse case managers begin the process of discharge planning coordination shortly after patients are admitted. Nurse case managers collaborate with social workers and nurses for a discharge plan which supports the requests of patients and their family members.
Emergency and trauma care: Our emergency and trauma services nurses drove the implementation of protocols providing optimum outcomes for sepsis, geriatric, stroke, and heart attack patients. Nurses triage patients to decrease wait times and provide prompt emergency care. Nurses support the achievement of, and care provided through, the Level I Trauma Certification and are recognized by the emergency nurses Association as Lantern Award recipients.
Inpatient rehabilitation care: Nurses provide specialty rehabilitation care to patients needing increased strength, endurance, and nursing care during their transition from acute care treatment to home or a skilled nursing facility. Nurses collaborate with physical, occupational, and speech therapists to meet patient care needs throughout inpatient rehabilitation.
Intensive care: Nurses care for patients who need ventilation support, CRRT, and specialized nursing care around the clock. These ill patients require highly-skilled nursing interventions. Critical care nurses have worked to reduce patient infections and improve patient mobility and comfort, supporting both the patient and their family members.
Medical and surgical care: Nurses care with compassion for patients needing general medical and/or surgical services. Acute care nurses have protocols to reduce hospital-acquired infections to influence hospital length of stay and increase patient comfort.
Neurology care: Nurses collaborate with the interprofessional team to provide care to patients through the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical intervention processes. There is a nurse stroke coordinator who leads the St. Anthony Hospital Stroke Certification process, ensuring top-level care for stroke patients. Neurology intensive care unit nurses provide inpatients with support and monitoring to identify and manage medical and traumatic neurological symptoms.
Outpatient care: Nurses support patients who may not need an inpatient stay but need outpatient care and treatment. Our gastrointestinal lab nurses prepare and care for patients needing procedures like endoscopies or colonoscopies. Interventional radiology nurses support patients through skilled diagnostic procedures to inform their healthcare. Infusion center nurses provide outpatient intravenous medications, including chemotherapy and antibiotics. Outpatient procedural nurses provide pain management alternatives to increase patient comfort. Senior Health nurses care for our aging patient population to support their healthcare needs.
Perioperative care: Our skilled nurses support the patient through preparation for surgery, assist during surgical procedures, and provide interventions and care during the recovery process. Professional nursing organization standards have been implemented by perioperative nurses, including the time-out process, reduction of micro-organisms that can result in infections, and team communication to track surgical instruments.
Spine care: Nurses provide care to patients through treatment and surgical intervention for spinal issues. Spine nurses have collaborated with the interprofessional team to improve pain control and mobility for post-operative spine patients.

Volunteer
St. Anthony Hospital has an enormous commitment to bringing our community the very best in care with the highest level of compassion. Part of that care and compassion comes from our many volunteers, who are the heart and soul of St. Anthony Hospital. Whether you are welcoming people at our front desk, walking with someone to a testing area, or quietly holding a hand in the ER waiting room, you are always good medicine.
If you have questions or want more information, contact us:
- Phone: 720-321-4070
Volunteering is rewarding and fun but demands a significant service-based commitment on your part. At St. Anthony Hospital, our patients, visitors, and staff benefit when volunteers serve on a regular, long-term basis. We ask that you carefully consider your schedule and your abilities before you apply to volunteer at St. Anthony Hospital. See a list of volunteer requirements:
- Flexibility and availability. We schedule regular, weekly shifts that are typically four hours in length (these may vary by assignment). Most of our volunteers average 100 to 200 service hours each year.
- Must be 16 years of age or older. There is potential for exposure to confidential information which may be obtained directly or indirectly concerning patients, doctors or personnel.
- Undergo a background check. All volunteer applicants must sign a background check form at the information session.
- Provide immunization records, flu-shot documentation, TB testing, and two personal references. All of these forms will be available for you at the information session.
Due to the nature of our services, St. Anthony Hospital does not accept court-ordered volunteer applicants.
Application process
Upon submitting your online application, you will receive a confirmation with a link where you can register for an information session. You must attend a session within six months of submitting your online application.
Due to the uniqueness of volunteering in a hospital including the commitment level and regulatory guidelines to which volunteers must adhere, all prospective volunteers are required to attend this session prior to moving on in the application process. When you attend:
- You will meet staff from St. Anthony Hospital Volunteer Services Department.
- Hear more about volunteer opportunities.
- Go over remaining documentation requirements and ask questions about the application process.
Next steps
Once you have successfully completed the background check and all documentation has been submitted and approved, your volunteer placement will be confirmed and you will receive your first volunteer assignment.
We will make sure you have all the orientation and training you need in addition to uniforms, if necessary, and parking arrangements.
Are there age requirements to volunteer at St. Anthony Hospital?
Yes. Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. Some volunteer opportunities may be limited due to additional age requirements.
I don't have a Social Security Number. Can I still apply to volunteer?
No. A valid Social Security Number is required because no other form of identification can be substituted for our verification process.
I have court-ordered community service. Can I volunteer at St. Anthony Hospital?
No. We cannot accept court-ordered service volunteers.
Where do I send my completed application?
You may complete and submit your application online. All applicants under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign the Authorization to Volunteer.
What will happen if I don't agree to complete the screening process?
According to laws and health care regulations, all prospective volunteers are required to complete our screening process, which includes a thorough background check and health screening. Those who do not complete the screenings will not be able to volunteer at St. Anthony Hospital. This process, though rigorous, helps to ensure the health and well-being of our volunteers, staff and the patients and families we serve. As a result, it is a benefit to you as well as to St. Anthony Hospital.
Why do I need a Tuberculosis (TB) test and what does it involve?
Volunteers are required to have a QuantiFERON-TB Gold blood test. This is a new FDA approved blood test for the detection of tuberculosis (TB) infection. As a modern alternative to the traditional tuberculin skin test (TST), the QuantiFERON Gold TB test offers a simpler and more accurate, reliable, and convenient TB diagnostic tool. This test is highly specific and can strongly predict true positive TB infection. The test results are obtained by a one-time blood draw. Once you complete the blood test you will only be required to complete a written TB survey form every year thereafter.
I had a TB test within the past year. Do I just need to complete the rest of the health assessment?
If you have had a TB skin test this year, you are still required to do a QuantiFERON-TB Gold blood test. If you have already had a QuantiFERON Gold blood test, please contact the volunteer office to determine if another is required.
