When you are in labor, enter through the emergency department at the north entrance of the hospital, 401 E. Spruce. The ED registrar will check you in and a member of our team will accompany you to the Maternal Child Unit. If you are scheduled for an induction or cesarean section, enter through the outpatient services entrance on the west side of the hospital. The registrar will check you in there.

The Maternal Child Unit is located on the main floor. For you and your baby's safety, our unit is a protected area that will require patients and visitors to request access upon entering and exiting the unit.

Visiting hours:

  • Daily 6:00 am - 10:00 pm

We want you to be as prepared as possible for the arrival of your new baby. The following are a few items you may want to have packed and ready to bring with you to the hospital:

  • Robe, slippers/socks
  • Nursing bra or good supportive bra
  • Cosmetics, toiletry items
  • Going home outfit for the baby
  • Receiving blanket or heavy blanket (as weather permits)
  • Infant car seat (Kansas law mandates the use of infant seat when traveling by car)
  • Camera or video camera-for before or after the baby is born

*Note: If possible, leave valuables at home

Although most babies are born healthy, we recognize that some new babies have very special needs. Our Level II Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) offers state of the art technology and services to ensure that newborns with high risk complications get the best opportunity at a healthy life. Our NICU is staffed with specially trained nurses to care for newborn gestational age of 32 weeks and above.

We have a team of pediatricians to offer care to your newborn in the NICU. Parents are always welcome and encouraged to visit. For family and friends of the newborn in the NICU, we have visiting hours and regulations we follow to ensure a safe, quiet, comfortable, healing environment for every child.

Before Baby Arrives

As an advocate for women and children, we realize every expectant mother has different wants and needs. Be sure to discuss your preferences with your doctor well in advance. Ask about medications, anesthesia, delivery and other options that are available to you.

The staff at St. Catherine Hospital - Garden City are dedicated to providing personalized care for you and your baby. At your prenatal visit, you should receive a Birth Plan Brochure. Feel free to fill this out and if you have special requests, let this be known to the nursing staff upon admission.

Prenatal Classes

St. Catherine Hospital - Garden City offers birthing classes for the expectant mother and their family. The classes are taught by specially trained, experienced registered nurses and include a variety of topics, such as: labor and delivery, breastfeeding, comfort measures and medication options, infant care and much more. Our classes will ensure that you and your family are prepared for labor and delivery and welcoming a new little one into your home.

St. Catherine Hospital - Garden City has received the Gold Level “Breastfeeding Employees Support Award” from the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition. The award is based on proven and established standards to benefit employers and employees. It recognizes businesses that provide support services to their breastfeeding employees, to include education as well as the time and space for employees to nurse and/or pump breastmilk at their workplace. This award is just one example of the work and dedication associates of St. Catherine Hospital - Garden City have shown toward breastfeeding initiatives.

The experience of breastfeeding is special for so many reasons -cost savings, health for both baby and mother, and the bond which is formed. The High 5 program encourages adoption of five evidence-based maternity care practices that support breastfeeding success. Should you need breastfeeding training, education or support while in the hospital, our specially trained Mother-Baby Nurses will help you breastfeed right from the start. If you would like to speak with our Lactation Educators, please ask your nurse.

A member of the maternal child team will contact you a few days after you leave the hospital to assure that you and your baby are well; ask about feedings and newborn care; and offer assistance in any way we can to help you get the resources you need.

Pre-admission program

Our pre-admission program is designed to make your hospital admission relaxed and worry free. A pre-admission appointment gives you the opportunity to talk with an experienced Birth Center nurse, share your birth preferences and ask questions about your upcoming birth experience. It's ideal to make your pre-admission appointment when you are approximately 31 weeks pregnant. Birth Center tours are not included during your appointment.
