- Osteonecrosis
The orthopedic specialists at CommonSpirit Orthopedics Audubon offer comprehensive treatment for knee pain. Using the latest techniques, we will accurately diagnose the cause of your knee pain. Then, our providers will work with you to devise a custom treatment plan. If appropriate, our knee specialists will recommend conservative treatments first, such as physical therapy or injections using corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid.
When surgery is necessary, we offer comprehensive surgical options from ACL repair to total knee joint replacement. Our orthopedic surgeons also offer the latest advancements, such as the 3D ConforMIS custom implant, and partial knee replacement.
Specialized advanced knee pain treatments offered include:
Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)
Certain conditions that cause knee pain may benefit from a new procedure, called platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP). This treatment is used for specific conditions and usually after other non-surgical options have been tried. Our knee specialists will help determine if this procedure is right for you. Treatment, which is done in our physician’s office, begins with an X-ray evaluation to identify the source of pain, and makes sure the patient’s condition will benefit from PRP. The treatment itself is completed in a few minutes, and most patients are able to resume their normal activities the next day.
Custom Knee Replacement
CommonSpirit Orthopedics & Spine Audubon knee specialists include several orthopedic surgeons who specialize in total knee replacement surgery. In addition, some patients may benefit from a specialized option called the ConfoMis custom implant. Using proprietary algorithms, the ConforMIS technology uses images from a CT scan to map your knee and create a 3D model. The software then uses that information to design a customized implant.
Partial Knee Replacement
Our orthopedic knee specialists are among the region’s few surgeons to offer partial knee replacements to patients who are candidates for this alternative to total knee replacement. Our specialists will help determine if you may be a candidate for one of the two types of partial replacement:
- Unicompartmental arthroplasty for the inside or outside of the knee. Most patients go home the same day, versus three or four days for a total knee replacement.
- Patellofemoral arthroplasty to replace the kneecap. Patients typically spend one night in the hospital.
Meniscus Repair
Our orthopedic physicians are highly experienced at a procedure called a partial meniscectomy, that trims or removes the damaged tissue to restore stability and eliminate pain.
Osteonecrosis Bone Disease Treatment
CommonSpirit Orthopedics Audubon doctors provide expert treatment for osteonecrosis. Our orthopedic doctors perform arthroscopic microfracture and core decompression to treat osteonecrosis.
Sports Medicine
We also offer specialized services for knee pain and knee injuries resulting from sports or activity. Our sports medicine experts have advanced treatment in conditions including ligament tears, including the ACL and MCL injuries, IT band syndrome, and jumper’s knee. We can recommend treatment to relieve the pain as quickly as possible to get you back in action and also prevention measures to help ensure the problem doesn’t occur again.
Hip
Hip pain relief is closer than you think
When you meet with the experienced surgeons of CommonSpirit Orthopedics Audubon, you’ll come to realize you can live a life without hip pain. That’s because our specialists are highly trained in diagnosing and determining what exactly is driving your pain. They will then present you with the most appropriate plan based on your specific needs, including minimally invasive surgical techniques such as anterior hip replacement, labrum tear repair, and hip resurfacing. It all starts the moment you choose to make an appointment with one of our specialists today.
Our team of hip specialists are experts in treating hip pain caused by a variety of conditions, including:
- Arthritis
- Bursitis
- Fracture
- Hip dysplasia
- Infection
- Insufficient blood supply (avascular necrosis, or osteonecrosis)
- Labral tear
- Low-back pain
- Strain or sprain
- Tendinitis
Whether caused by a traumatic injury or life’s wear and tear, hip pain can make regular activities difficult. At CommonSpirit Orthopedics Audubon, we begin your comprehensive treatment by evaluating the source of your pain to determine the best course of treatment for you. Whenever possible, our orthopedic doctors will begin treatment with non-surgical therapies, including pain medications, hip injections, and physical therapy. When surgery is necessary, our orthopedic physicians offer a range of innovative surgical options, including:
Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery
We offer hip replacement surgery using the direct anterior approach, which features smaller incisions and generally affords patients a faster discharge from the hospital and a quicker recovery time. Anterior hip surgery is performed through a 3- to 5-inch incision in the front of the hip rather than the more traditional surgery through the back of the hip. The surgeon is able to access the joint between muscles instead of making incisions through the gluteal muscles, which is necessary with the traditional posterior approach. This means patients have less pain and fewer restrictions after surgery.
With the anterior approach to hip replacement surgery, many patients are able to leave the hospital the same day of their surgery. After about three months of recovery, hip replacement patients can return to fully active lives.
Accelerated Recovery Program for Hip Surgery
Our orthopedic physicians have helped develop a hip replacement program that gets patients home faster, with less pain. Through the Accelerated Recovery program, our hip replacement surgeons use minimally invasive surgical techniques, and apply regional blocks instead of general anesthesia. Regional blocks around the joint allow for pain-free surgery without the risks or lingering effects of general anesthesia. Patients in the program start walking and participating in physical therapy the day of surgery, and most go home the day of surgery or the day after.
Benefits of Accelerated Recovery include less pain, swelling, and blood loss; a shorter hospital stay; fewer problems such as blood clots and infections; and a faster return to normal activities.
Hip Joint Resurfacing
In this procedure, rather than replacing the entire hip joint, our orthopedic doctors replace the hip socket with a metal cup, and then reshape the damaged hip ball and cap it with a metal, dome-shaped prosthesis. This procedure benefits younger patients with hip degeneration who want to continue working at physically demanding jobs, or participating in activities that require flexibility.
Sports Medicine
We also offer specialized services for hip pain and hip injuries resulting from participating in sports or activities. Our sports medicine experts can provide non-surgical treatments as well as surgery for conditions including ligament tears, muscle strains including proximal hip and quadriceps strains, iliotibial (IT) band syndrome, and labral cartilage tears. Often, a joint or the surrounding structure will be compromised after a sports injury, so our orthopedic doctors also focus on rebuilding strength to prevent future injury.

Our specialists here at CommonSpirit Orthopedics Audubon offer you comprehensive treatment for shoulder and elbow pain. Whenever possible, we will start with non-surgical treatments such as steroid injections and physical therapy. When surgery is necessary, please rest assured that our orthopedic surgeons offer leading-edge shoulder and elbow surgeries, including many of the latest, proven procedures:
Plasma-Rich Protein Injections
Some conditions that cause shoulder or elbow pain may benefit from platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP). If physical therapy, medications and steroid injections have not helped relieve your pain, your orthopedic doctor may recommend PRP. In this procedure, the patient’s own blood is drawn and platelets, which are known to reduce inflammation and promote healing, are then injected into the affected area. The procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis, and most patients are able to resume their normal activities the next day.
Shoulder Reconstruction Surgery
Our expert orthopedic surgeons can perform shoulder reconstruction procedure arthroscopically, using small incisions that allow tiny instruments to perform precise repair. Arthroscopic shoulder reconstruction is typically performed as an outpatient surgery.
Arthroscopic surgery, also called minimally invasive shoulder surgery, offers several benefits, including:
- Smaller incisions
- Less trauma to soft tissue
- Less pain
- Shorter recovery time
- Lowered risk of infection
Some patients may need an open surgical procedure that involves a larger incision over the shoulder to perform the repair.
CT-Guided Shoulder Reconstruction
CommonSpirit Orthopedics Audubon is one of only a handful of practices in the region with orthopedic surgeons who are specially trained to offer shoulder reconstruction surgery using CT imaging. With this leading-edge technology, advanced CT images guide the surgeon to the best possible positioning for the repair, which allows the surgery to provide maximum stability.
Biologic Shoulder Resurfacing
CommonSpirit Orthopedics Audubon shoulder specialists can identify whether a patient is a candidate for this alternative to total shoulder replacement. This procedure preserves the patient’s normal anatomy, essentially replacing worn, arthritic cartilage of the shoulder joint with donor cartilage.
Frozen Shoulder Surgery
CommonSpirit Orthopedics Audubon surgeons are highly experienced in performing arthroscopic surgery to relieve frozen shoulder. During this procedure, tight portions of the shoulder joint capsule are cut via small incisions, with the goal of stretching and releasing the stiffened capsule. Manipulation involves gently moving the shoulder enough to stretch or tear the accumulated scar tissue, increasing range of motion.
Total Shoulder Replacement
CommonSpirit Orthopedics Audubon surgeons will discuss whether a total shoulder replacement is the best option based on a patient's individual condition when the joint is severely damaged by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, or a rotator cuff tear. If surgery is recommended, our surgeons are highly experienced and will provide the highest level of care.
Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement
In certain circumstances, a patient may need a reverse total shoulder replacement to allow other muscles to do the work of the rotator cuff. CommonSpirit Orthopedics Audubon physicians are leaders in performing reverse total shoulder replacement.
Candidates for reverse total shoulder replacement include those who have:
- A completely torn rotator cuff that cannot be repaired
- Joint disease or deterioration caused by a rotator cuff tear
- A previous shoulder replacement that was unsuccessful
- Severe shoulder pain
- A complex fracture of the shoulder joint
- Chronic shoulder dislocation
Elbow Arthroscopy
At CommonSpirit Orthopedics Audubon we typically perform elbow arthroscopy as an outpatient procedure if we identify that it may relieve symptoms and improve a patient's range of motion. Our orthopedic surgeons also use this procedure to smooth irregular surfaces and remove bone spurs.
Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) Reconstruction
Also known as Tommy John surgery, our surgeons can perform UCL reconstruction, using a healthy tendon from elsewhere in the body, usually an arm or leg, and using it to replace the torn ligament in the shoulder.
Sports Medicine
We also offer specialized services for shoulder and elbow pain and injuries resulting from sports or activity. Our sports medicine experts have advanced treatment in conditions, including ligament tears, tennis elbow, and golfers elbow. When surgery is necessary, our orthopedic surgeons offer the latest in advanced techniques for a variety of procedures, including:
Achilles Tendon Injury Repair
While a few patients may achieve a full recovery from a torn Achilles tendon without an invasive procedure, many doctors recommend surgery to assure complete recovery and to lessen the chances of a future rupture.
CommonSpirit Orthopedics Audubon surgeons provide surgical Achilles repair using the minimally invasive Percutaneous Achilles Repair System (PARS). PARS allows the surgeon to more effectively repair the tear by providing better access to nearby healthy tendon. In addition, smaller incisions mean faster recovery for most patients. And, one recent study found that patients who had surgery using PARS returned to normal activities more quickly than those who had open surgery.
Ankle Replacement Surgery
Replacing the ankle joint with artificial implants is used only in rare cases. CommonSpirit Orthopedics Audubon specialists will advise you as to whether an ankle replacement may offer an advantage over ankle fusion, including maintaining mobility in the ankle joint. Recovery includes physical therapy to restore flexibility and range of motion and typically lasts 12 weeks: four weeks bearing no weight, followed by four weeks weight-bearing in a boot, and then four weeks in regular shoes.
Bunion Surgery
At CommonSpirit Orthopedics Audubon, we are a leader in minimally invasive bunion surgery. Under local anesthesia, a small incision is made, a specially designed surgical instrument is inserted through this tiny opening, and the bunion is removed. From pre-op preparation to recovery, the procedure generally takes less than two hours. Patients typically go home immediately, experience minimal to no pain, and most bunion surgery patients are able to walk and drive immediately after surgery.
Fusion Surgery
CommonSpirit Orthopedics Audubon surgeons offer fusion surgery. Our specialists fuse the affected bones in the foot or ankle together with the use of rods, pins, screws, or plates. After healing, the bones remain fused together. The procedure typically provides permanent pain relief.
