Are you suffering from a urologic disease or condition and looking for expert care? At CommonSpirit Health, we offer exceptional care provided by some of the top urologists and robotic surgeons in the region. We perform minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery for a wide variety of urologic diseases and conditions. So whether you're looking for innovative surgical treatment for prostate cancer, urinary incontinence or an adrenal disease, you can count on our talented team to deliver the advanced urology care you need.
When medication and other nonsurgical treatments are either unavailable or cannot relieve symptoms, surgery may effectively treat conditions that affect the reproductive organs and the organs of the urinary tract. These conditions include prostate cancer, bladder and kidney cancer and more. Because many of these areas are difficult to access and surrounded by nerves affecting urinary control and sexual function, using minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery can help your surgeon more precisely perform surgery and spare surrounding nerves and tissue, which may enhance both your recovery experience and clinical outcome.
We recommend contacting one of our urologists right away if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms or conditions:
- Abnormal prostate exam
- Blood in your urine
- Erectile dysfunction
- Frequent urination
- Kidney pain
- Male infertility
- Painful urination
- Testicular pain or lump
- Urinary incontinence
You don’t need to travel far from home for treatment of your urologic condition. Our surgical team can perform the following robotic urologic procedures at a location close to you:
- Prostatectomy - removal of all or part of the prostate gland due to prostate cancer or other cancers of the pelvis
- Partial nephrectomy - removal of cancerous tumors or diseased tissue of the kidney
- Pyeloplasty - reconstruction or revision of the renal pelvis
- Cystectomy - removal of all or part of the urinary bladder due to bladder cancer
- Nephrectomy - removal of all or part of the kidney
- Ureteral surgery - removal of all or part of a ureter
- Sacrocolpopexy - repair of a pelvic organ prolapse
- Adrenalectomy - removal of one or both adrenal glands
- Renal cyst decortication - removal of benign renal cysts
CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital - Mountain Point is the first in Utah to offer the only image-guided, heat-free automated robotic therapy for BPH.
What is prostate enlargement/BPH?
BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that surrounds the urethra (the duct that carries urine from the bladder). It is thought to be the result of cell growth and hormone changes that are part of the aging process. Approximately half of all men 75 and older have some BPH symptoms, including:
- Problems getting a urine stream started or stopped completely
- A weak urine stream
- Feeling a frequent need to urinate, even causing one to wake at night
- The sensation that the bladder has not emptied, even after urination
While uncommon, BPH may cause the bladder to become blocked or urine to back up. The latter can lead to bladder infections, stones, or kidney damage.
How is prostate enlargement/BPH treated?
When prostate enlargement is confirmed — usually through a urine test and/or digital rectal exam — a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test may be advised to rule out prostate cancer. While prostate cancer and BPH are not connected, they can cause similar symptoms. A wide range of treatments are now available for BPH, including medication, minimally invasive therapies, and, if the symptoms are severe, surgery.
Holy Cross Hospital – Mountain Point is the first in Utah to offer a robotic-assisted therapy option. Surgeons remove prostate tissue using a robotically controlled, heat-free waterjet to detach the tissue causing the blockage. This robotic technology ensures the prostate tissue is removed precisely, consistently, and predictably.
Benefits of automated robotic therapy for BPH
- Potential benefits of robotic assisted therapy for BPH treatment include:
- Real-time imaging guidance using ultrasound combined with cystoscopy visualization provides a multidimensional view of the treatment area
- Personalized treatment using advanced planning software allows the urologist to identify and map tissue to preserve and resect
- Heat-free waterjet resection precisely removes prostate tissue and minimizes thermal damage to surrounding tissue
- Superior safety compared to transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) due to low irreversible complications
- Greatly improves flow of urine
- High rate of continence and erection preservation
- Most men preserve ejaculation
- Significant, long-lasting relief with low rates of complications
At Holy Cross Hospital – Mountain Point, our experienced surgeons and patient care providers are highly trained in automated robotic therapy. Our team’s unique knowledge of what patients need before, during, and after a procedure helps to ensure quality care, peace of mind and the utmost courtesy, professionalism, and competency.
The procedure is covered by most insurances and Medicare.
