Mercy Regional Medical Center culminated Hospital Week, May 9-15, by hosting our very first DAISY Award ceremony! As background, the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses has been adopted at Mercy Regional Medical Center to celebrate nurses for their extraordinary care and compassion. Patients, their families and hospital staff members can nominate a nurse for the compassionate care they were provided with or witnessed.
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

At our May 14 ceremony, Lisa Eason was honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. Her nomination form read,
Lisa is a relentless advocate for patient, family, and co-workers’ whole person care. The energy and support she dedicates to patients set the bar for excellent nursing care. There are countless projects and ideas that Lisa brings to our department that elevate the level of care. Most recently, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lisa has taken on the enormous task of communication with families when they cannot be with their loved ones. Lisa has developed a very compassionate letter that we send out to families when a loved one is admitted with COVID-19 to the ICU. It covers everything from a typical ICU course of treatment and the rollercoaster it can be, to how we as a health care team will extend our love, respect, and compassion to their loved ones. We have set up an email for family to send pictures for us to hang up in the rooms. All this information is sent to the family with a card signed by the nurses and doctors. Lisa has also created journals for the health care team to make daily entries on the care and course of treatment. These journals help patients and families put together their ICU stay decreasing anxiety and PTSD. Lisa's dedication to patient care brings honor to the nursing profession.
As the award recipient, in addition to the items mentioned above, Lisa was also awarded a unique hand-carved serpentine stone sculpture from Zimbabwe, entitled “A Healer’s Touch” and cinnamon rolls to share with her ICU unit. A DAISY Award banner will also be displayed in the ICU to further recognize Lisa!
