The St. Anthony North Family Medicine Residency is a 3-year ACGME accredited and osteopathic-recognized family medicine residency program. We are a 10-10-10 program with allopathic and osteopathic medical school residents.
St. Anthony North Hospital is a 121-bed, single-residency community hospital within the CommonSpirit Health network. Our hospital incorporates health and wellness services for local communities. Highlights of St. Anthony North Hospital include 60,000 square feet of integrated physician clinics for both primary and specialty care, an ambulatory surgery center, birthing center with private birthing suites, Level III Trauma Center with 24/7 emergency services, 121 inpatient beds, and outpatient diagnostics center with lab and imaging services. Ongoing hospital expansion includes the opening of a brand new wing in August 2024 and anticipation of a new state of the art cancer center opening in January 2025.
Clerkships Information
St. Anthony North Family Medicine Residency offers clerkships for 4th year allopathic and osteopathic US medical students. We offer clerkships that either focus on outpatient, inpatient medicine, obstetrics or a combination of all three. Our clinics fully embrace the patient-centered medical home and operate under the team-based care model, provide full-spectrum family medicine service and have comprehensive, integrated care team support.
The Colorado Association of Family Medicine Residencies will offer limited stipends for travel and lodging starting in fall of 2024.

Clerkships for fourth year students
There are two different organized learning experiences as well as a sub-internship offered at St. Anthony Family Medicine Residency:
- The inpatient clerkship teams medical students with the residents on the inpatient medicine services. The students will assume primary care of patients with the residents and work directly with them. Medical students may choose to do inpatient medicine, obstetrics or a combination of the two.
- The outpatient clerkship allows the medical student to experience the residency outpatient clinic. Students work one-on-one with residents and faculty as they care for the residency's patient population in the ambulatory setting.
- Family Medicine Sub-Internship (4 weeks total): 2 weeks on the family medicine inpatient service; 1 week on the family medicine OB service and 1 week in the family medicine outpatient clinic.
A completed application includes:
- Your application
- A personal statement defining your interest in family medicine
- A Certificate of Insurance from your school providing proof of malpractice insurance coverage
- A letter from your Dean's office verifying good standing in medical school.
Student rotations are scheduled on a first-come, first-serve basis, your interest in family medicine and strength of application.
Prior to a clerkship being approved, there must be a signed Educational Agreement between your medical school and St. Anthony North Hospital.
4th year medical student clerkships
St. Anthony Family Medicine Residency offers clerkships for fourth year medical students from U.S. schools. These rotations can be from one week to two months long (with any combination of inpatient, outpatient and OB) to enable medical students to work with our faculty and residents.
Teaching activities
Formal and informal teaching is provided to students in the same setting as that of our residents. Morning sign out, daily noon conference, hospital-sponsored grand rounds and residency conferences on a variety of topics are offered regularly. Students are encouraged to attend these conferences.

These rotations provide an opportunity to get to know our program, our residents and faculty, which is helpful for students interested in applying to our Program.
- Family Medicine Sub-Internship: 4 weeks: 2 weeks on the family medicine inpatient service at St. Anthony North Hospital; 1 week on the family medicine OB service at St. Anthony North Hospital and 1 week in the family medicine outpatient clinic.
- Family Medicine Rotation - Variable: 1 to 4 weeks; inpatient medicine, OB, and/or outpatient clinic, depending on interest and availability

Frequently Asked Questions
Submit your application and all documents through ERAS. Please note: If you are not currently in medical school, a letter of recommendation must be received from the physician you are currently working with. All applicants must have graduated from medical school within the past three years or participated in a different U.S. residency within the past year. A letter from the program director of that residency will be required.
We are unable to sponsor Visas. International graduates must be Educational Commission of Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certified at the time of application and have at least one year of U.S. clinical experience.
Strong preference will be given to applicants eligible to obtain full licensure in the State of Colorado at the end of the PGYI year in training. If you have questions regarding Colorado licensure, contact the Board of Medical Examiners at 303-894-7690.

Our program will be accepting signals. We recommend applicants signal their most interested programs regardless of whether they did a clerkship with us or not.
We offer three continuity clinics training sites. Residents at each clinic will follow the same curriculum and have identical inpatient and OB experiences at St Anthony North Hospital. Five residents per year are located at the St Anthony Family Medicine Center Orchard, which is located on the first floor of St. Anthony North Hospital. Three residents per year are located at the CommonSpirit Primary Care 84th Ave. Two residents per year are located at the CommonSpirit Primary Care Thornton.

Why choose our location?
At St. Anthony North Hospital is a single residency site and all inpatient services are staffed by family physicians and residents. We have a robust inpatient medicine service that cares for a high acuity and wide range of pathology. Our residents care for all patients on our busy labor and delivery service with our low OB track residents getting over 50 deliveries during residency and high OB track getting 100 deliveries during residency.
All three outpatient clinic sites are full-spectrum family practices and can offer a similar array of services. Clinical precepting duties are shared by clinical faculty and community physicians, many of whom are alumni of our program. The teaching focus is on family physicians training family physicians. We have specialty preceptors who serve as instructors in our clinics for a few specialty clinics such as dermatology, sports medicine, and psychiatry.
In addition to family physician preceptors, residents are supported in their patient care by a multidisciplinary team of health promotion specialists, RN care coordinators, pharmacists, diabetic educators, registered dieticians, patient advocates, licensed mental health specialists, and social workers. All take an active role in patient care, see patients at all clinic sites with residents, and provide individual and group teaching in their respective specialties. On our behavioral health team, we have these providers embedded in the care team and co-located on-site for ongoing individual counseling. All clinic patients have access to an array of integrative healing services and providers, such as OMT, acupuncture, and mindfulness-based therapies.
Our patient populations are ethnically and culturally diverse. They seek care for various medical problems representing the full-spectrum of care from newborns to geriatrics, including a substantial obstetric practice. It is common for residents to be caring for three generations of the same family.

About Devin Bourne
Born in Canada, Devin grew up mostly in Utah, first having a career in microbiology before becoming a physician. In his free time Devin likes to travel, build models, and spend time with his family.

About Richard Sanders:
Richard grew up in Littleton, Colorado before heading east to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for its MD/PhD program. His research was on holistic approaches to health care, including narrative medicine and the medical humanities, as well as some of the many obstacles hindering further development of these approaches. While in Illinois, he met his husband Joseph. They now have a dog, Nilla, who they adopted from the Colorado Prison Canine Program. He also has a brother who is an OB/GYN resident in LA and a sister-in-law who is an RN. Being surrounded and supported by such a great family, he feels like he really knows how to put the family in Family Medicine!

Richard chose St. Anthony because he wanted to be closer to family and old friends while training for full spectrum Family Medicine in a supportive, vibrant community of healthcare providers. Continuity of care is the underlying priority that brought him to Family Medicine, so having the privilege to work across the inpatient, outpatient and labor and delivery settings at the high level that St. Anthony provides is deeply fulfilling for him.

About Kris Simon
Kris is originally from Royal Palm Beach, Florida, and has loved living in Colorado since 2013. Outside of medicine, his two greatest loves are music and food. He plays a variety of instruments including piano, bass, guitar, ukulele, musical saw, melodica, and he has been known to carry a tune. He loves whipping up dishes from many Asian cuisines and has a fantastic cookie recipe. He also enjoys taking in the Colorado landscape, tabletop games, and raising two cats with his partner Adam.

About Jamie Brunworth
Jamie Brunworth, DO, specializes in comprehensive primary care for patients of all ages. With a focus on acute complaints, chronic disease management, and overall well-being, Dr. Brunworth strives to provide appropriate, competent medical care to all patients with honesty, compassion, and respect.
Dr. Brunworth completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Miami before pursuing her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at Nova Southeastern University.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Dr. Brunworth leads an active lifestyle and enjoys her time spent outdoors. She can often be found hiking, mountain biking, camping, snowboarding, and rafting. On weeknights, she often plays soccer, and she might indulge in a game of pickleball as well
About Megan Fessenden
Megan Fessenden, DO, is a compassionate family medicine practitioner with a focus on full-spectrum primary care. Her comprehensive approach allows her to address a wide range of medical needs and provide holistic care for her patients. In her practice, Dr. Fessenden values the importance of collaboration with her patients. She works alongside them to develop personalized and effective health management plans. Emphasizing a patient-centric approach, Dr. Fessenden incorporates alternative medicine and respects the cultural beliefs of her patients whenever possible.
Dr. Fessenden's holds a Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering degree from Boston University and a Master of Biomedical Engineering from Saint Louis University. She also earned a Master of Healthcare Administration degree from Idaho State University before completing her medical education at Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Outside of work, Dr. Fessenden enjoys various hobbies. She likes to ski, hike, and do yoga to stay active. You can also find her reading, cooking, and traveling often
About Mason Gedlaman
Mason Gedlaman, MD, is a Primary Care provider who believes in providing high value care to all of his patients. He aims to meet patients where they are in their healthcare journey and to work together with patients on their health goals. Mason performs a variety of in-office procedures and cares for acute and chronic illnesses and injuries.
Dr. Gedlaman attended medical school at the University of Colorado. He is currently a Family Medicine resident.
Outside of work, Dr. Gedlaman enjoys a variety of sports, including basketball, soccer, and golf. He also likes to spend time with his family and his dogs.
About Benjamin Hollas
Benjamin Hollas, DO, is a compassionate and dedicated primary care provider, specializing in the management of acute and chronic diseases. With a particular focus on diabetes and weight management, musculoskeletal injuries, and depression and anxiety, Dr. Hollas is committed to helping patients achieve optimal health and well-being. He hopes to empower patients to overcome challenges, heal their bodies, and accomplish the goals set forth in their own unique journeys.
Dr. Hollas completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Oklahoma before continuing his medical education at Kansas City University.
In his spare time, Dr. Hollas enjoys various activities such as biking, hiking, and playing tennis or pickleball. He enjoys reading, hammocking, listening to all kinds of music, and petting all kinds of dogs.
About Dikchhya Karki
Dikchhya Karki, DO, is committed to enhancing patients’ overall well-being while building trusting relationships and providing whole-person care. With a focus on managing common diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, as well as providing preventive screenings, Dr. Karki strives to promote optimal health in her patients.
Dr. Karki completed her undergraduate studies at Union College in Nebraska before pursuing her medical education at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She also holds certifications in Trauma Informed Care and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).
Dr. Karki enjoys a variety of hobbies outside of work. You can often find her singing karaoke or dancing. She also likes to hike and spend time with her family and friends.
